Prioritizing Indonesia Natural Resources-based Innovation, Kilala Tilaar Earns a Doctorate Degree

Bandung (2/10)  – At the Graha Sanusi Hardjadinata Padjajaran University Bandung, Kilala Tilaar does a doctoral promotion trial with a dissertation research report tittles “Purchase Intention Model Based on Product Innovation, Storytelling, Value Co-Creation and Farmer Empowerment in Indonesia Natural Cosmetic Products”. This dissertation prepared as one of the requirements for completing studies to obtain a doctoral degree in the Doctoral Program of Management Science, Business and Economy Faculty of Padjadjaran University, Bandung.

On his dissertation, Kilala Tilaar who is the CEO of Martha Tilaar Group, construct an alternative purchase intention model that is useful for developing natural-based beauty industry in Indonesia. He also deliver his concern about Indonesia beauty industry that still depend on imported raw materials and the importance of farmer and community involvement in the industry. Kilala added that community empowerment involved in the industry’s supply chain, could be the success key in ensuring the sustainability of the company, while the counseling, education, and development of farming communities are important to produce good and standarized agricultural products  to support industrial needs. Beside that, Kilala is also emphasized the important of education regarding knowledge and love of biodiversity and culture so that people are aware of the potential of their nation and support their love of domestic products.

On the dissertation that is also published in the Journal of Law and Sustainable Development and the Journal Supply Chain Management, Kilala explained that Indonesia as the country with abundant biological wealth and authentic local wisdom has incredible potential to fill a niche in the natural cosmetics trend market. In that case, supported with innovation and scientific approach to support product claim, Indonesia is considered to be able to rise competitively. Indonesia with 30.000 plants species which 7.000 of them are nutritious plants, has millions of recipes for health and beauty. Unfortunately, even though Indonesian natural resources very potential for beauty industry, apparently 85% of the ingredients are still imported to fulfill the productions needs. This is also become the concern of Martha Tilaar Group.

Since the beginning, Martha Tilaar Group committed to utilize Indonesian natural resources to produce good quality product with economic value. The consistency and innovation of our herbal and natural beauty products, was made by exploring local wisdom, researching various kind of aromatic, cosmetic, and medicine plants, and event cultivating the plants at Kampoeng Djamoe Organil (KaDO) Martha Tilaar. The research of these Indonesia natural ingredients has been done for a long time through Martha Tilaar Innovation Centre (MTIC).

More than that, MTIC is also producing and developing active natural ingredients, Placentacens Berto Extract which using Indonesia natural resources, both for internal used and export. This is one of our ways to reduce the dependency to imported ingredients. Meanwhile, for export abroad, PT Martina Berto Tbk is doing a collaboration with Clariant,  one of well-known raw materials companies in the world. This cooperation has been established since 2015 based on both companies antusiasm to intensify downstream market by increasing product’s competitiveness.

Through his dissertation and Martha Tilaar Group’s efforts, Kilala hopes that beauty industry especially natural cosmetics market in Indonesia will be more developed by utilizing Indonesia natural ingredients, increasing awareness to farmer’s empowerment and embracing herbal farmer, and of course to produce new innovation.
