Indonesia is granted with incredibly rich mineral resources and biodiversity. Orchid is one of biodiversity that Indonesia should be proud of. Fact shows that one-third of orchid species are growing in Indonesia, including Coelogyne pandurata (black orchid), Paphiopedilum glaucophyllum (the shiney green leaf Paphiopedilum or tropical lady’s-slipper), Aerides odorata, Phalaenopsis amabilis (month orchid), Phalaenopsis violacea (spangled orchid), and Coelogyne marthae.

Coelogyne marthae Was Named After Indonesian Woman

Coelogyne marthae has become the special part of Martha Tilaar Group’s history. The green colored with a tint of brown orchid species was named after the founder and chairwoman of Martha Tilaar Group, Dr. (H.C.) Martha Tilaar, a successful and inspirational Indonesian womanpreneur. The name was granted to Dr. (H.C.) Martha Tilaar by The National Herbarium of the Netherlands due to her dedication in establishing Martha Tilaar Professional Chair at Leiden University, Netherlands on 2000 and as an award for her achievement in establishing cosmetic company that always look up to the local wisdom.

As an expression of gratitude and as a contribution to the environment and orchid conservation, Dr. (H.C.) Martha Tilaar through PT Martina Berto Tbk created bar soap that represents the shape of Coelogyne marthae. The sales revenue will be donated to support community based orchid conservation at Mount Merapi National Park and karst ecosystem at Gunung Kidul regency, Yogyakarta. The potential threat for orchid existence in Indonesia is still relatively high, whether it is due to natural disaster, land conversion, and theft of genetic resources. PT Martina Berto Tbk is working hand in hand with Indonesia Biodiversity Foundation (Yayasan Keanekaragaman Hayati Indonesia or KEHATI) to handle this matter. Coelogyne marthae bar soap can be purchased at Martha Tilaar Shop outlets.
